Toss it Out Tuesday - Hairspray

My Dove hairspray was another product high on the “toss it out” list. I was horrified that it was a 9 on the Think Dirty App... it was definitely time to let it go. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy thing to replace but I was up to the challenge.

While most of the ingredients in hairspray are no longer carcinogens, a step in the right direction, many still contain fragrance. Fragrance a big issue because it's hard to regulate and assess for harm and there are many different ingredients that can go into this “fragrance” label. Any product that lists “fragrance” or “parfum” on their ingredients list and you know there is a not so nice cocktail of chemicals which should probably be avoided. These chemicals can cause hormone disruption and allergies.

Other popular ingredients in hairspray are the polymers and solvents called Acrylates/Hydrozyesters Acrylates Copolymers which help to form a film on the hair to give it its holding properties. It's also not safe to inhale these ingredients on an everyday basis especially if it's in an aerosol can. And it’s not very good for the environment either.

Clinique Hair Spray

I did a lot of research on the web to find a suitable but “safer” replacement but none of the reviews were very encouraging. I decided to give Clinique a try even though I was apprehensive about it’s “gentle” hold claim because let’s face it I am a 80s/90s child, and still crave that “stiff” hold. LOL

I was drawn to this hairspray again because I was able to buy it at most major department stores and it was fragrance free and aerosol free. It did cost me double the price of the drugstore brands, $19 in fact, but it was worth a try. Oh and it's only rated a 3 on the Think Dirty App.

I am not going to lie it did take me a while to get use to this product and I was almost going to go back to my old tried and true hairspray but I stuck it out and am now very happy with my Clinique hairspray.

It is a gentle hold however, it’s buildable but not sticky. I can use a bit more on the days I require more "control" to my hairstyle and it holds up very well. The pump doesn’t get clogged and the spray comes out in a nice fine mist. It also doesn’t leave a heavy residue in my hair and it easily washes out.

I am sure you still have to be careful with hairspray in general because its probably not healthy to be breathing in this stuff everyday but I feel much better that I am using a fragrance free and non-aerosol brand now.

If you are a hairspray user like me, I say toss out your old one and give Clinque a try!
