YAYYYYYY Summer is here! And when you think about summer you obviously think about swimming... but remember it’s very important to be safe and cautious around the water!
Do you know these facts about drowning:
Children over the age of 1 may have a lower risk of drowning if they have had some formal swimming instructions.
A child can drown in less than one inch of water.
Drownings can occur in less than 60 seconds.
Most drownings are silent.
75% of children who drown have only been out of the sight of their parents for a few minutes.
Near drownings or drownings can happen to anyone even those with formal swim training.

There are several ways to lower the risk of drownings:
Make sure you know CPR and First Aid in the case of emergency.
Teach your kids (and yourself) the basics about swimming and floating. Just remember swimming lessons are not drown proof.
Never leave children unattended around water.
Make sure you have a regulation fence (4 sided) built around any pool and install safety gates. If you have a pool ladder make sure to remove it when your pool is unattended.
Make sure to have a pool alarm in case a pet, child or adult falls into the pool.
If a child goes “missing” make sure you always check your outside pool or hot tubs first.
Use flotation devices cautiously, they are not intended to be used as safety devices. Life jackets, when used correctly, are the only devices that can keep swimmers safe.
Have your phone near you and charged in case of an emergency.
Know the silent signs of drowning ex. arms failing.
Refrain from alcohol when participating in any water activities.
Always swim with a buddy and swim with a lifeguard on duty.

The best prevention to avoid swimming accidents this summer starts with you! Be careful around the water and practice safety first!
